Abstract :
The application of optical techniques in biomedical monitoring and measurement systems is rapidly gaining momentum, particularly following the declassification of many photonic sensing and imaging technologies. Photonics has been successfully applied in areas such as biomedical parameter measurement, ocular fluorophotometry, infrared imaging of tissue, optical coherence tomography for measurements in the eye, laser based surgery, laser Doppler measurements of blood flow, to name but a few. This Colloquium provides a forum for presenting recent research and applications of photonics in the biomedical sector, and examines the status of various technologies expected to make a future impact in this field
