Abstract :
The formulation of a field-dependent ageing model for polymeric insulation starting from Dakin´s chemical ageing theory is discussed. The approach is illustrated by means of a space charge ageing mechanism, and a tentative assignment of the chemistry involved in XLPE and PET made. The life functions derived are compared with others including electrical tree failure, and the means for distinguishing between the alternative mechanisms discussed
