Abstract :
To explore the potential of UWB (ultrawideband) radar for over-the-ocean surveillance applications, a program was begun at the Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) to design and assemble an UWB radar in 1991 at a test site located along the Pacific Ocean near San Diego. The source generated a pulse with a 0.5-ns pulsewidth and a 0.2-ns risetime, yielding a waveform with energy concentrated in the 0.2-1.0-GHz portion of the spectrum. The radar and a few of the first measurements with it are described. In particular, calibrated measurements of sea clutter made over a bandwidth of 0.2-1.0 GHz are reported.<>
