Abstract
Knowledge of end-to-end available bandwidth can significantly improve the performance of multimedia applications in a home network. A number of heterogeneous link technologies are predicted to coexist in future home networks. In this paper, we compare the performance of a few existing bandwidth estimation tools in a home network testbed constructed with multiple link technologies, namely Ethernet, 802.11 and HPAV. Through empirical results we show limitations of existing tools and emphasize the need for further research of network measurement techniques in such home networks.
