Abstract :
For the analysis of integrated optical structures for the method of lines (MoL), which is a special finite-difference method has proved to be especially well suited. Its advantages are a semianalytical approach that leads to a comparatively small numerical effort, a high calculation precision with negligible roundoff errors, very accurate results for the fields on the discretization lines because of the relation to the discrete Fourier transformation, stationary behavior, and inclusion of the interface conditions between different permittivities. The MoL is described in detail, and the results obtained using it are discussed. It is concluded that the MoL is a very versatile tool for the analysis of optical waveguides.<>
