Abstract
A novel ALU architecture, two-staged architecture, is developed. According to the mathematical principle of equivalent transformation, all functions can be ultimately calculated within four basic functions. In the two-staged ALU architecture, all input operands are transformed into a proper form in the first stage, which is then fed to the second stage for final computing with one of the four basic functions. The novel architecture benefits design activities in terms of design quality and modifiability, and shortens the time to re-meet variations in the ALU´s functions.
