Abstract
Incorrect surgical of mitral valves failure will cause death. Surgical repair can be improved by knowing the correlations between backflow and the rigidity of mitral valve. A two-dimensional fluid structure interaction model of the mitral valves was investigated. A simple approximation of the heart geometry was used. The viscosity of blood and the elastic properties of the valve leaflets were obtained from published data. In this study, numerical modeling was used to determine the correlation between the degeneration of the mitral valves rigidity and backflow problem based on critical parameter of blood. Two stages of mitral valves simulations, systolic and diastolic stages and also with and without ventricle were investigated. The results show linear correlation between degeneration of the valves and volume of back flow. The linear relationship only begins after some percentage of degeneration. The findings are the prediction of the behavior of the mitral valves and blood flow which can assist the medical practitioners in their decision on the patients´ treatments.
