Abstract
Many processes rely on human operators as part of their control and fault diagnosis hierarchy. The use of knowledge based systems in such applications presents special problems. The issues are discussed in terms of practical experience in chemical applications and in anaesthesia, concentrating on the issues of knowledge and ownership, nature of faults, fault diagnosis and actions for operators, and re-use of knowledge
