Abstract :
An approach to design is presented for the development of initial product designs. Examples are given of standard design rules and the definition of rules which are specific to a manufacturing system. It is shown how these rules can be applied throughout the design process and used to formulate a product design, which incorporates functional requirements and the constraints of manufacture. The technique has been applied successfully to a new range of rotary vane pumps and achieved the objectives of increased functionality, improved reliability and lower manufacturing costs
