Abstract
The MPEG-2 specification, presently gaining a foothold in satellite distribution, consumer applications, and in SNG, has not yet made a breakthrough into applications based on telecommunication networks. However, distribution on these networks represents a powerful opportunity for broadcasters and service providers. The paper discusses the implementation of MPEG-2 based multichannel broadcasting applications. Specifically, the paper looks into the transmission of MPEG-2 data streams on 34 Mbit/s networks, and presents a multichannel infrastructure for primary distribution with multiple encoders and decoders. The paper highlights the operational requirements in a distribution environment, where program material typically comprises several signal components. It is shown how the implementation must pay special attention to signal properties and video formats, and to a range of operational characteristics, not covered specifically by MPEG-2
