  • Abstract
In September 1993, the United States Air Force (USAF) initiated an aggressive 3 year program to field and evaluate five Micro SMES devices at selected federal government sites. The sites were: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York; Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Megacenter, Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; Wright Laboratory Air Base Technology Branch, Tyndall AFB, Florida; and Buildings 618/620, McClellan AFB, California. This program brought together government agencies, commercial industry, university scholars, and government customers worldwide to identify cost effective military and commercial applications in power quality. Data collected has resulted in new applications and significant system improvements, while encouraging the entry of a second vendor into the industry. Although the project was scheduled to end September 1996, a program extension of one year has been requested. The unit developed by the second source vendor has not been fielded, and a second DC unit is scheduled for delivery mid 1997. The project cannot be considered complete until the preceding actions occur and results are evaluated
