Abstract :
The application of rotary head recording technology as a solution for the current capacity problems that exist with tape backup devices is addressed. Rotary-head (helical scan) tape backup subsystems are based on technology derived from commercially available video recorders. The adaptation of the technology used in 8-mm video recorders for data storage applications is discussed, covering the technology that is used in rotary head devices, the market need for these products, the general applications, and existing and future products based on this technology.<>
