Abstract
M. Baker and D. Cassell (1989) have previously developed a methodology for calculating productivity indices for faculties of institutions of higher education. These are justified as important management benchmarks for optimizing the utilization of this class of knowledge workers. The methodology is corroborated by the general literature on total productivity and quality management and can be applied also to other classifications of knowledge workers. A low total productivity index signals a mismatch between the job task demands and the qualifications of the assigned knowledge worker
