Abstract
Recent experience in the exploitation of Polish medium-voltage power networks shows that prevailing method used to determine distribution line earth faults, based on directional criteria, is often unreliable and poorly effective. This paper describes how current earth fault detection automation proves to be particularly ineffective during high resistance or arcing in the vicinity of the earth fault
