Abstract
This paper investigates the influence of the power converter on the performance of surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, which employ high frequency voltage injection to achieve low speed control. The effects of IGBT voltage drop, deadtime and deadtime compensation on position estimation are discussed and the use of matrix converter is proposed to reduce these effects. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the system employing the matrix converter for sensorless position estimation.
