Abstract :
Broadband packet networks based on the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are expected to support extremely bursty traffic. This network provides a large bandwidth, and hence, to make the operation of the network economical and to take advantage of the typical burstiness in various types of data from different sources, statistical multiplexing is necessary, which in turn requires new congestion control strategies. A detailed analysis of congestion in high-speed cell-based networks is presented. Currently available congestion control schemes and some of their salient features are also presented
