Abstract :
Waste activated sludge (WAS) is the byproduct of biological wastewater treatment process and its amount is increasing very rapidly. In our previous studies it was observed that WAS hydrolysis and acidification were significantly enhanced under the alkaline conditions, especially at pH 10 and the concentration of fermentation products, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) et al., was also improved. In this paper the enhancement of hydrogen production based on acetobacteria inhibition and methane production from the sludge fermentative mixture, improvement of simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal of municipal wastewater added by the sludge fermentation liquid and and the efficient Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) accumulation from the sludge fermentation liquid were summarized.
