  • Abstract
The central function of reliability in design is mirrored by the central function of design in manufacture, both are essential concepts for wealth creation and both are frequently neglected. A vital part of the design brief is to devise means of numerical measurement for the different attributes required of a system or product, by specific numerate statements and methods of demonstration. This is an absolute need, especially for reliability. As a basis for an appropriate methodology, the author models an electric motor drive. The motor is decomposed into its basic constituents (stationary and rotating), as is the driven machine. Adding input via control and maintenance, spares and redundancy (including personnel), establishes a reliability level, leading to availability producing an output-the production process. The highly interactive complex parameters should be noted
