Abstract :
In the recent years, we have witnessed a tremendous growth in telecom networks around the world. Most of this growth is occurring in deployment of wireless networks in the emerging markets, where the power grid is not as reliable. Typically batteries and diesel generators are used to provide power backup in these applications. Both these technologies have substantial operational and maintenance costs, in addition to significant impact on the environment. It is estimated that most of the new growth in wireless subscribers will come from rural areas in developing countries where access to electricity is either non-existent or intermittent.
