  • Abstract
This paper presents the results of a research study called REFRACT into the potential of transport telematics technologies to provide a flexible response to air quality problems in towns and cities. The REFRACT study was undertaken under contract to the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) as part of their Seedcorn Programme and was completed in early 1998. Transport telematics technology offers the potential for flexible solutions that can be implemented in response to predicted air pollution episodes. We present the results of a systematic attempt to bring together the experiences from isolated research studies and field trials of pollution-responsive telematics applications.
