Abstract :
Portable mechanical ventilators currently used on the battlefield are designed to maintain life support. But it´s still difficult to design an appropriate compressor for portable mechanical ventilators. A new type of compressor with small size, high output pressure, and high flow-rate is designed to satisfy the demands of portable mechanical ventilators. The special compressor has a new structure which is different from that of an axial compressor or that of a centrifugal compressor. In general, an axial compressor takes in gas along axial direction and exhausts gas in the same direction, and a centrifugal compressor takes in gas along axial direction but exhausts gas along radial direction, while this new type of compressor takes in gas along radial direction and exhausts gas along radial direction too. The structure and working principle of the compressor are introduced in detail. A series of tests on its performance (output pressure and flow-rate) indicate that this new type of compressor has good performance. At a rotary speed of 6000 revolution per minute, the compressor with impeller diameter of 110 mm can produce a maximum output pressure of 7.4 kPa and a maximum flow-rate of 226.69 liter per minute.
