Abstract
Link adaptation algorithms have been developed for 3rd generation systems to select the optimum combination of speech and channel coding for a particular link quality. This paper considers the application of the concept to GSM by a combining a new channel coding scheme with a GSM half rate voice coder on a full rate GSM channel. Gross rate link adaptation is achieved by switching between half rate and full rate channels when channel quality deteriorates; This paper demonstrates that a significant enhancement in coverage and perceived quality is possible with this procedure
