Abstract
In this paper inter-system handover initiation, between DECT as a cordless system and GSM as a cellular system, is discussed and a mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the effect of various parameters on performance of handover. It is shown that the performance of the handover (HO) is very much dependent on the cordless base station location within the cellular cell coverage area and also a considerable amount of unnecessary HO could be experienced in cordless-cellular handover. It is also shown through a proposed scheme, that the mean number of handovers and unnecessary handover probability could be considerably reduced. The results obtained through a mathematical model have been confirmed by computer simulations for handover position
