Abstract :
Software development tool and process integration are discussed. Tool integration offers the ability to integrate leading-edge technology from different sources into sophisticated development systems; process integration offers overall productivity gains, through automation of project management, documentation, and communication. The potential US market for frameworks for creating integrated environments, excluding specific design tools, which is estimated to be $233 million, cumulative over the next three years, is examined. It is argued that software-development automation tool suppliers must develop and adhere to a small number of standard environment specifications to ensure success for their own products, as well as the overall computer-aided software engineering (CASE) market.<>
