Abstract
A study was carried out using Zeland Software to determine the effects of removing the central conducting portion of microstrip square patch antennas on their directivity with infinite ground plane. Inspite of a reduction in the antenna size, the directivity remains constant and also does not change by modifying the substrate thickness. The influence of a finite ground plane size g, on the radiation parameters was also studied. It was found that at g=1.1/spl lambda//sub 0/ the best directivity can be obtained.
