Abstract :
The efficiency of a two-level scheme of successive source coding is analyzed for a ternary source with a class of balanced distortion measures. For each distortion measure the subset of distortion pairs for which the scheme does not achieve the standard rate-distortion efficiency is calculated in its explicit form
