Abstract
A handwriting learning CAI (computer assisted instruction) system for five Japanese characters for elementary schools is developed. Three types of similarity evaluation functions (membership functions) are designed for beginners, medium and higher grades from the standard characters which we believe are beautiful. A promotion is automatically decided from the average of the last three times of beauty evaluations using fuzzy inferences. Furthermore, in the medium and higher grades, each stroke is compared with that of the standard character and proper instructions on how to improve the handwriting are given.
