  • Abstract
The use of high-frequency (50 to 500 MHz) bulk (longitudinal and shear) ultrasonic waves for evaluating the adhesion from the reflection or transmission coefficient at an interface is discussed. The mechanical displacements inside optical transparent materials are measured using a laser probe and the Fresnel coefficients deduced for several representative adhesion defects. This allows for fixing the order of magnitude of the variations in the Fresnel coefficients versus the degree of adhesion. A comparison of these experimental results with those deduced from a theoretical model is reported in order to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasonic nondestructive testing methods for adhesion studies
