Abstract :
An analysis of the power flow in a surface acoustic wave (SAW) convolver leads to a clear picture of the influence of the different physical effects. It is shown how, at the output port, the acousto-electric conversion of the power generated by nonlinear effects contributes to the total efficiency of the convolver. An equivalent circuit model allows a very straightforward description of the process. How the elements of this model can be calculated and measured is demonstrated. A version of Fano´s limit that takes ohmic resistance effects into account is also discussed. The approach is validated by measurements of the source impedance of different convolvers. These measurements show good agreement with the computations
