Abstract :
The problem how to determine the optimal number and locations of traffic counting points in a road network for origin-destination (O-D) matrix estimation is discussed. Several location rules for traffic counting points are improved according to particular analysis to the concept of maximum possible relative error (MPRE), and based on the most important two rules: path covering rule and link linear independence rule, an integer linear programming model for determining the locations of traffic counting points satisfying these rules is established. The rationality and reliability of the model are illustrated with a road network example
