  • Abstract
    MESFET digital IC technology has successfully penetrated the high data rate telecommunication and data communication segments. The reasons for this become clear when the important economic issues in supplying high performance devices for telecommunication and data communication are considered. Specifically, OEM customers do not buy technology, they buy the most cost effective products that satisfy their requirements. In this paper, the focus is on the economics of manufacturing high performance ICs. Several high speed digital IC technologies are compared from this perspective, and the most critical issues impacting cost of manufacture are identified. MESFET technology is shown to provide the most cost-effective solution in the present market. Performance issues and capabilities for MESFET technology versus other competing device technologies for 10 Gb/s and higher data rates are also discussed.
