Abstract :
We have created a computer program model which predicts the energy consumed by an electric bicycle for various vehicle, environment, and terrain conditions. The incentive for the model was our inspiration to enter the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic with an electric-powered bicycle. This is a 195 mile (314 km) bicycle event which attracts some 10,000 entrants. Many of the commercial electric bicycles available have a range of 15 to 25 miles (24-40 km). To demonstrate that this range could be surpassed and to prove the possibilities for such extended travel we conducted a careful performance analysis and designed an experimental bicycle. We report the analysis portion of the task, with the confirmation from traveling the route
