Abstract :
The issue of site autonomy in the model of a decentralized distributed database system is discussed. The two major characteristics of site autonomy are identified and examined, and examples are provided to demonstrate their significance. A system architecture is proposed that provides a flexible and powerful way of achieving the required degree of site autonomy.<>
