Abstract
A cognitive radio (CR) system should have the ability to detect the presence of incumbent users and adjust its transmission so that it can utilize unused licensed spectrum without causing interference to incumbent users. To effectively protect incumbent users, properly modeling the expected interference from CR system is therefore very important. We model the accumulative interference generated from CR system to translate interference constraints of digital television (DTV) system, e.g. coverage area loss, to feasible network planning parameters such as minimum isolation distance or maximum transmitted power. Using the model coverage area loss can be formulated as a function of inter-system isolation distance as well as secondary BS or UE transmitted power. Furthermore, we investigate how the network parameters affect the sensing requirements of the CR system to meet DTV interference constraints.
