In memoriam: Hans J¿¿rgen Schmitt

Dr. Hans J¿¿rgen Schmitt was born on August 3, 1930, in Dortmund, Germany, and died on May 25, 2014, in Aachen, Germany. Hans J¿¿rgen Schmitt studied physics at the University of Goettingen, Germany, and received his PhD in 1955 in the field of high-frequency technology. The Harvard University in Cambridge and other prestigious research facilities in the USA and Switzerland were his first stops, before he joined the Philips Research Laboratory in Hamburg in 1975. There, he consolidated his reputation as an outstanding scientist in the fields of solid-state physics, microwave engineering, and optics.
