Abstract
A motion vector estimation (ME) method for VLSI implementation, according to MPEG (ISO/DIS-11172) is presented. The algorithm is based on a block-matching method, and a two-step tree search is applied. Moreover, a simple 2-D finite impulse response (FIR) filter is used just before subsampling, in order to avoid nonapplicable vectors. The filter is realized by additions only, so implementation is very easy. The computation amount decreases to one-fortieth compared with full-search ME through using this algorithm. The efficiency of 2-D FIR filter is evaluated by simulation. This VLSI can estimate motion vectors for MPEG, CCITT H.261 and CCIR Rec.723 in real time
