Abstract
A novel handover initiation procedure is proposed and analyzed for mobile radio networks. In the presence of voice sources and packet access protocols, the sequence of packets that may be lost due to channel impairments is used to trigger a handover. In particular, a threshold length of the sequence of lost packets is used as a handover criterion for delay sensitive sources. In a log-normal shadowing environment, the algorithm performance is derived analytically. Simulation is also used to validate the approximations introduced in the analysis
