Abstract
A novel approach for using bit-rate reduction together with the hidden channel technique to accomplish compatible multichannel audio in the European high-definition television (HDTV) system is presented. In this system, a compatible stereo audio signal is used as a carrier for hidden multichannel information. A slave mode decoding is introduced, resulting in a low-complexity implementation of the decoder. The capacity and properties of slave mode hidden channel coding are reported. The inherent bit error rate is discussed. Examples of the dynamic data transmission rate and the related bit error rate measured in the implemented real-time system are provided
