  • Abstract
    Modulator chirp and fiber nonlinearities are two important effects that influence the transmission performance of WDM systems based on nondispersion shifted fiber. To avoid attenuation limited performance for 10 Gb/s signals and hence achieve dispersion limited transmission, either an optical booster amplifier or optical preamplifier is typically required. Either a semiconductor optical amplifier or erbium doped fiber amplifier can be used at the transmitter with the former offering the potential advantage of photonic integration with a modulator and laser
