The therapeutic potentials of twenty medicinal herb species traditionally used in China to treat bacterial infections were evaluated for the treatment of five drug-resistant Streptococcus suis strains. Candidates were primarily screened using the disk-agar method for antibacterial activity against five different Streptococcus suis strains.Of the herbs tested, the aqueous and methanolic extracts of Forsythiae Fructus exhibited antibacterial activity against all five Streptococcus suis strains, though the methanolic extract had slightly higher activity. The MIC values of this extract against the five Streptococcus suis strains varied from 1.562 to 3.125 mg/ml. Results from these findings suggest that the herbal extract may be used as natural antibacterial agent to inhibit the four drug-resistant trains of Streptococcus suis.
