  • Abstract
A comparative study of three different transform based video coding techniques, which are mainly used in low/very low bit-rate video coding schemes i.e. H.263 standard is presented in this paper, namely, the discrete cosine transform, discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet transform. In the experiments, three different transforms are used in the transform coding process in the video coding scheme, and their performances in term of peak signal to noise ratio and the complexity of the en/decoding scheme are measured and compared. The experimental results show an improved quality of the video sequence obtained from the use of discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet transform. At the same time, the disadvantage from using them is identified.
