Abstract :
Regional labeling is one of the most fundamental image processing functions for automated visual inspection. A labeling algorithm for a pipeline image processor based on raster scanning is presented, and a mathematical proof of its correctness is given. Since the algorithm can retain label linkage information in the form not of a graph structure but of a simple tree structure, the hardware of the pipeline processor becomes very simple and easy to implement by wire logic. The realized processor is shown, and the extension of the algorithm for labeling images in a large frame such as HDTV (high definition TV) is suggested
