Abstract :
Africa is characterized by dispersed loads and generation sources spanning hundreds and in some cases thousands of kilometers. Connecting these generating sources and load centers is a challenge and one solution to address this challenge is via high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. This paper briefly discusses some potential HVDC projects in the Southern African region and discusses in more detail a possible HVDC transmission link to the Cape, fed from generation sources in predominantly the north of the country.
