Abstract
This paper outlines the challenges that had to be overcome to produce high voltage, (1100 V) high power, flameproof switched reluctance variable speed drives for operation in underground coal mines. The objective was to meet existing regulations and specifications, be compatible with existing switchgear and have high reliability and overload capacity
