Abstract
Expert systems have been in use since the early eighties, but there is a lack of strong theoretical base for handling the design process of expert systems development. The concept of design process plays a very important role in the beginning of the expert systems development process. One of the main issues is how the designer (knowledge engineer) thinks about the design process. The designers ´process is shaped by the knowledge engineer´s understanding. This paper endeavors to reveal some of the major issue related to the knowledge engineer´s conception of design process and an effort is made to disclose the expert systems´ design process. This attempt is an initial step towards a successful implementation of expert system projects.
