Abstract
The term “rapid system prototyping” is introduced in the context of academic research in digital systems. The technological issues as well as issues of policy which affect system prototyping in academia are presented, as well as opportunities stemming from a rapid system design cycle. The complementary role of academia and industry in the development of systems is outlined
