  • Abstract
Due to the unique characteristics of GIS, the architecture of a distributed Geographic Information System (GIS) must be built centered on GIS and RS data. Service Oriented Architecture(SOA) is used to architect a Distributed GIS which integrates multiple GIS service from disparate domains such as Google Map, Bing Map and custom map defined by ESRI. As long as these map services are published on the network using same predefined tiling scheme and in the form of standardized webservice, they can be aggregated together to form a mashup map. In the same time, Rich Internet Application (RIA) is incorporated in Representation Tier to deal with formatted messages passed back by back-end SOA in this study. SOA and RIA can cooperate together to deal with real-time interaction between server and client, improving the user interface greatly and making the whole application more agile. In this paper, firstly we introduce and analyze the characteristics of SOA and RIA. Then a GIS architecture combing SOA and GIS is designed, simultaneously several key technologies are also discussed. In the end, s prototype application has been developed. This experiment proves that this GIS architecture posted in this study is efficient and feasible.
