Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can cause health problems in animals, including humans. One of the most economical and efficient methods used for the destruction of VOC in gaseous effluents is their catalytic oxidation to produce CO2 and water. The aim of this work was to develop a non noble metal catalyst from the sludge produced during acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment for the catalytic oxidation of VOC. Two catalysts were synthesized through the thermal treatment of goethite obtained from AMD treatment sludge: PL450 and PL600. All catalysts were characterized using BET surface area, pore volume, XPS, XRD and TGA analyses. These catalysts represent good alternatives to those commercially available, due to their origin, cost and availability.
