Cadmium (Cd2+) is an endocrine disruptor and exerts negative effects on several endocrine components of the silver sea bream. Exposure of sea bream to waterborne cadmium resulted in marked elevation of plasma Cortisol, indicative of the onset of severe stress response. Plasma thyroid hormone (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) levels were unaffected by cadmium exposure. Although hepatic IGF-I mRNA abundance was unchanged, pituitary growth hormone level was lowered in fish exposed to cadmium.
