Abstract
Historically, companies developing equipment for the US Navy have had difficulty satisfying the Mil Std 461 RE02/RE102 electric field emission requirements. Since the development of the New Attack Submarine (NSSN) came under the acquisition reform initiative, the NSSN electromagnetic compatibility Technical Direction Agent (EMCTDA) evaluated and recommended the use of commercial electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements wherever possible. This paper identifies the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) approach required to mitigate any additional risk incurred by relaxing the electric field emissions requirement for both mission-critical and nonmission-critical equipment and/or systems
